A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HONEYCOMBS

In 1963 rhythm guitarist Martin Murray started a group called The Sheratons (“saw it on the back of a removal van I once ran into”), which in due course included Allan Ward (lead guitar), John Lantree (bass guitar), and an architectural student called Chris (drums).  Deciding that a singer was also needed, Dennis “Denny” D’Ell was invited to join them.  (D’Ell, in fact, was only a phonetic spelling of his surname Dalziel.)  The previous year he had won £25 at a local talent contest, judged by Mark Wynter and Dorothy Squires, for his renditions of “Devil Woman” and “From a Jack to a King”.  The Sheratons were playing several nights a week at the Mildmay Tavern, 130 Balls Pond Road, Islington, and fully intended to turn professional.  When Chris baulked at the idea, John’s sister Anne Lantree (later to be known as “Honey”) took over on drums.  She had originally intended to be a guitarist, having been given lessons by Martin to whom she was then engaged.

Budding songwriters Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley came across them there one wet Monday evening in February 1964.  Impressed with their sound, they made them a casual offer of a newly-completed number.  Arriving late for an appointment with Joe Meek, who used his flat at 304 Holloway Road, Islington as a recording studio, he threw the group’s equipment down the stairs and told them to “bugger off”.  However, following Howard and Blaikley’s intervention, they were invited back to record that number - “Have I the Right?”.  Although rejected by HMV Records, Pye’s Louis Benjamin accepted it.  The group became The Honeycombs: a pun on Anne’s contrived nickname and her former job as a hairdresser’s assistant.

Meek had already achieved two No. 1 hits: John Leyton “Johnny Remember Me” (Top Rank, 1961) and – most famously – The Tornados “Telstar” (Decca, 1962).  Released in June 1964, “Have I the Right?” took several weeks to become his third – and final – chart topper towards the end of August.  A radically-different shorter version, “Hab’ ich das Recht”, without foot-stomping, was also produced for the German market.

The Honeycombs self-titled first LP came out in September 1964, and carried a glowing testimonial from Joe Meek on the cover.  They went on to have three other relatively minor hits in the UK, with lack of real chart success put down to a string of overseas tours that prevented their records from being actively promoted at home.

Peter Pye, guitarist with The Skylarks, stood in for Martin Murray when he broke a leg and hand after being dragged from the stage of the Peterborough Palais at the beginning of October 1964.  This had come just before their headlining tour, The Big Beat Scene.  Peter took over permanently when Martin quit a few weeks later.

Denny left in April 1966, followed shortly afterwards by Allan and Peter.  “Joe wasn’t going to do much to change what had become a very old-fashioned sound,” the singer told Record Collector in 1995.  Even a session at Pye’s Marble Arch studios, where Meek recorded the “Who Is Sylvia?” single, had not made any difference.  Colin Boyd, Rod Butler and Eddie Spence replaced them, and the last two releases featured Colin on lead vocals.  Soldiering on, they broke up after Joe Meek’s suicide.  Other Honeycombs groups were later formed that included some of the original members, but Martin Murray is now the only one still active.

Sadly, Denny died of cancer on 6th July 2005
