THE MERSEYBEATS
The Merseybeats started life as The Mavericks when the band was formed in 1960 by Tony Crane and Billy Kingsley before becoming The Pacifics in 1961. Bob Wooler, MC of The Cavern Club, named them The Merseybeats in 1962 by which time they had been joined by Aaron Williams and John Banks.
The Merseybeats initially signed to Brian Epstein but left shortly after as they didn't get the same smart suits as The Beatles. The Merseybeats then signed to Fontana and released their first big hit "It’s Love That Really Counts" in 1963. They followed this up in 1964 with their million selling, gold disc single "I Think of You". In the same year Billy Kingsley left the band and was replaced by Johnny Gustafson and had two more major hits with "Don't Turn Around" and "Wishin' & Hopin'". In 1966 the popularity of the band had waned and Tony Crane and Billy Kingsley formed a 2 man vocal band called The Merseys, they got to No. 4 in the UK chart with their 60s classic "Sorrow" which was covered by David Bowie in 1973.
