Michael Joseph Jackson was born on 29th August, 1958. He was an American singer/songwriter, entertainer and businessman. Jackson began career in music at the age of 11 with his brothers in The Jackson 5 and his solo career in 1971.
He is referred to as the "King of Pop" and his 1982 “Thriller” album remains the world’s best selling album. In the 1980’s, Michael Jackson became a huge figure in American pop music and culture due in large part to his videos "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and "Thriller" which were widely credited with transforming the music video from a promotional tool into an art form. Jackson also popularized a number of physically complicated dance techniques, such as ''The Moonwalk'' and his distinctive musical sound and vocal style has influenced many hip hop, pop music and contemporary R&B artists across several generations. Jackson raised millions of dollars for charity, and supported 39 different charities in all.
He has won 13 Grammy Awards, charted 13 number one singles in his solo career and posted sales of over 750 million records worldwide. Further achievements include winning the award for “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time". In recent years controversy over Michael Jackson’s personal life damaged his career, however, he was due to kick off a series of 50 live performances in 2009. Sadly, after collapsing at his home on 25th June 2009 he was taken to hospital, where he later died aged 50.
