Sex Pistols
NEW ORDER
Rising from the ashes of the legendary British post-punk unit Joy Division, the enigmatic New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of the 1980s; embracing the electronic textures and disco rhythms of the underground club culture many years in advance of its contemporaries, the group's pioneering fusion of new wave aesthetics and dance music successfully bridged the gap between the two worlds, creating a distinctively thoughtful and oblique brand of synth pop appealing equally to the mind, body, and soul.

New Order's origins officially date back to mid-1976, when guitarist Bernard Sumner (formerly Albrecht) and bassist Peter Hook - inspired by a recent Sex Pistols performance - announced their intentions to form a band of their own. Recruiting singer Ian Curtis and drummer Stephen Morris, they eventually settled on the name Joy Division, and in 1979 issued their landmark debut LP, Unknown Pleasures.

After completing sessions for Joy Division's sophomore effort, Closer, Curtis hanged himself on May 18, 1980; devastated, the remaining trio immediately disbanded, only to re-form soon after as New Order with the addition of keyboardist Gillian Gilbert. With Sumner assuming vocal duties, the new group debuted in March 1981 with the single "Ceremony," a darkly melodic effort originally composed for use by Joy Division.

The LP Movement followed a few months later, and when it too mined territory similar to New Order's previous incarnation, many observers were quick to dismiss the band for reliving former glories. However, with its next single, "Everything's Gone Green," the quartet first began adorning its sound with synthesizers and sequencers, inspired by the music of Kraftwerk as well as the electro beats coming up from the New York underground; 1982's "Temptation" continued the trend, and like its predecessor was a major favourite among club-goers.

After a year-long hiatus, New Order resurfaced in 1983 with their breakthrough hit "Blue Monday"; packaged in a provocative sleeve designed to recall a computer disk, with virtually no information about the band itself - a hallmark of their mysterious, distant image - it perfectly married Sumner's plaintive yet cold vocals and abstract lyrics with cutting-edge drum-machine rhythms ideal for club consumption. "Blue Monday" went on to become the best-selling 12" release of all time, moving over three million copies worldwide.
After releasing their brilliant 1983 sophomore album, Power, Corruption and Lies, New Order teamed with the then-unknown producer Arthur Baker to record "Confusion," another state-of-the-art dance classic, which even scraped into the American R&B charts. The group's success soon won them a stateside contract with Quincy Jones' Qwest label; however, apart from a pair of singles, "Thieves Like Us" and "Murder," they remained out of the spotlight throughout 1984.

Heralded by the superb single "The Perfect Kiss," New Order resurfaced in 1985 with Low-life, their most fully realized effort to date; breaking with long-standing tradition, it actually included photos of the individual members, suggesting an increasing proximity with their growing audience. Brotherhood followed in 1986, with the single "Bizarre Love Triangle" making significant inroads among mainstream pop audiences.

A year later the group issued Substance, a much-needed collection of singles and remixes; it was New Order's American breakthrough, cracking the Top 40 on the strength of the newly recorded single "True Faith," which itself reached number 32 on the U.S. pop charts. The remixed "Blue Monday 1988" followed, and in 1989 - inspired by the ecstasy-fuelled house music that their work had clearly predated and influenced – New Order issued Technique; their most club-focused outing to date, it launched the hits "Fine Time" and "Round and Round."

After recording the 1990 English World Cup Soccer anthem "World in Motion," New Order went on an extended hiatus to pursue solo projects; Hook formed the band Revenge, long-time companions Morris and Gilbert recorded as the Other Two, and, most notably, Sumner teamed with ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and Pet Shop Boys front-man Neil Tennant in Electronic, which scored a Top 40 hit with the single "Getting Away with It."

New Order reconvened in 1993 for their biggest hit to date, Republic, which earned the band its highest charting American single ("Regret") and fell just shy of the U.S. Top Ten, despite charges from long-time fans that the band had lost its edge. A major tour followed, although rumours of escalating creative conflicts plagued the group; refusing to either confirm or deny word of a breakup, New Order simply spent the mid-'90s in a state of limbo, with Sumner eventually recording a long-awaited second Electronic LP and Hook mounting another new project, Monaco.

"Brutal," the first new effort from New Order in a number of years, was featured on the soundtrack of the 2000 film The Beach, and the full-length Get Ready followed one year later. By this time, Gillian Gilbert had left the band to care for her and Stephen Morris' children, and Marion guitarist Phil Cunningham had been added to bolster the line-up. Dedicated touring followed the release of Get Ready, and New Order recorded a follow-up for release in 2005, Waiting for the Sirens' Call. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Dead Kennedys
The Dead Kennedys merged revolutionary politics with hardcore punk music and, in the process, became one of the defining hardcore bands. Often, they were more notable for their politics than their music, but that was part of their impact. The Kennedys were more inspired by British punk and the fiery, revolutionary-implied politics of the Sex Pistols than the artier tendencies of New York punk rockers. Under the direction of lead vocalist Jello Biafra, the Dead Kennedys became the most political and, to the eyes of many observers, including Christians and right-wing politicians, the most dangerous band in hardcore. By the mid-'80s, the band had become notorious enough to open themselves up to a prosecution for obscenity (concerning a poster inserted into their 1985 Frankenchrist album), and the ensuing court battle sped the band toward a breakup, but they left behind a legacy that influenced countless punk bands that followed.
The Dead Kennedys formed in 1978 in San Francisco when Biafra (vocals; born Eric Boucher) and bassist Klaus Flouride responded to a magazine ad placed by guitarist East Bay Ray. Drummer Ted (born Bruce Slesinger) joined soon after and the band played locally for the first two years of their career, occasionally venturing outside the Bay Area. Within a year, the band released their first independent single, "California Über Alles", an attack on the then-current governor, Jerry Brown. It was followed shortly afterward by their second single, "Holiday in Cambodia". In 1979, Biafra ran for mayor of San Francisco; he finished fourth. By this time, the band had become quite popular in both the American and British underground. Finally, in 1980, the band released their debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, on IRS Records. After its release, Ted left the band; he was replaced by drummer Darren H. Peligro.

Following the release of Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, the Dead Kennedys formed their own independent record label, Alternative Tentacles, in 1981. The first release on the label was the Kennedys' EP, In God We Trust. That same year, the single "Too Drunk to Fuck" scraped the bottom of Britain's pop Top 40, despite being banned from airplay. In 1982, the Kennedys released their second full-length album, Plastic Surgery Disasters. After its release, the band took a hiatus, during which bandmembers, most notably Klaus Flouride, performed with various side projects. During that time, Alternative Tentacles began to establish itself as a major force in the American underground.

The Dead Kennedys returned in 1985 with Frankenchrist, which was the record that earned the band its greatest notoriety. Included with the album was a poster of the Swiss artist H.R. Giger's Landscape #XX, a garish illustration of penises and anuses. A year after the release of the album, the Kennedys and Alternative Tentacles were prosecuted under revised Californian anti-obscenity laws for distributing pornography to minors because of the poster. For the next two years, the band was embroiled in a bitter legal battle, during which Biafra emerged as one of the most articulate advocates for free speech and vocal opponents of the PMRC. In the summer of 1987, the case ended with a hung jury and was dismissed.
Although the Dead Kennedys emerged victorious from the court battle, they didn't remain a band for much longer. Just before the prosecution began in 1986, the band released Bedtime for Democracy, which turned out to be their last official album. After the case was settled, the Kennedys split, releasing the posthumous compilation Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death in 1987. Biafra embarked on a solo career, releasing musical and spoken-word recordings sporadically over the next couple decades. Flouride returned to his fledgling solo career, releasing two albums in the late '80s and early '90s. The DVD format of Dmpo's On Broadway, the Dead Kennedys' June 1984 performance marking the closing of San Francisco's avant-garde theater and nightclub, was released in May 2000.

New York Dolls
Formed in New York City in 1971, the New York Dolls are an American Rock group whose proto-punk sound was to not only inspire such great punk-rock acts as The Ramones, The Clash and the Sex Pistols, but many more diverse bands from Kiss to Guns N’Roses to The Smiths. Their visual style was to become the basis of many new wave and 1980’s glam metal, and they also began the local New York scene that later gave bloody birth to Blondie, Television and Talking Heads.
The band in its original form was created by Sylvian Sylvian (so good they named him twice) and Billy Murcia, two school friends who used to play in a band called ‘The Pox’ together who recruited Johnny Thunders to play bass. The band called themselves ‘The Dolls’, a name which apparently was inspired by a doll repair shop called the New York Doll Hospital which was opposite Sylvian and Murcia’s clothing business. The band soon dis-banded when Sylvian left to spend some time in London.
Thunders was then recruited by Arthur Kane and Rick Rivets who had been playing together in The Bronx. He suggested replacing the original drummer with his old band-mate, Murcia. After a turbulent few months of twisting and turning, the band settled into its unsettled primary form, consisting of singer David Johansen, guitarists Johnny Thunders and Rick Rivets (soon to be replaced by Sylvian Sylvian), bass guitarist Arthur Kane, and Billy Murcia on drums. They played their first gig on Christmas eve, 1971 at a homeless shelter.

Although their rock influences were obvious, early Rolling Stones, MC5 and The Stooges – they blended this with a heady cocktail of rhythm and blues, Marc Bolan-esque glam rock, and a few shakes of something indefinably original. The band was characterised by a certain self-conscious wit, Johansen’s on-stage aggression and energy carried through their records, giving depth and thoughtfulness to what has otherwise been considered a relatively bland vocal range.

Their songs were predominantly short vignettes about life in the New York underground; songs like Bad Girl and Who Are The Mystery Girls perfectly captured the vital energy seething below the city. Although they self-destructed fairly quickly, their two albums New York Dolls and Too Much Too Soon created Punk Rock before the term even existed. In 2004 former Smith's vocalist Morrissey, who was former president of a British New York Dolls fan club, invited the band to reform at the Meltdown festival which he was curating that year. The set was well received and resulted in a live DVD being released, along with a number of offers for other festival dates. Unfortunately Kane had to check himself into hospital with what he thought was a bad case of flu, her turned out to have Leukemia and died only a few hours after. The band have since recorded new material which was released in 2006 entitled One Day it Will Please Us To Remember Even This.

For over thirty years the Buzzcocks have been a figurehead of the English punk movement. In all these years the Buzzcocks never made concessions to freaks of fashion or dominant trends. Instead, they remained loyal to their own sound: beautiful songs drenched in punk energy, combining raw guitar riffs with intelligent lyrics.
Buzzcocks was formed in Manchester in the mid-seventies. Guitarist and vocalist Pete Shelley and vocalist Howard Devoto started their first musical project in 1975, inspired by electronic music, Brian Eno and American proto-punk groups like The Stooges. When Shelley and Devoto read an NME review of the first Sex Pistols live performance, the Buzzcocks as we now know them were born. In the spring of 1976 Shelley and Devoto organised two concerts of the Sex Pistols in Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall. The second gig was supported by the Buzzcocks, by now complete with drummer John Maher and bass guitarist Steve Diggle.
Soon the Buzzcocks themselves became one of the most popular punk bands. In late 1976 they issued their debut EP ‘Spiral Scratch’ on their own label ‘New Hormones’. This was a milestone in the punk movement. The EP sounded raw, energetic, repetitive and minimalist and became a guideline for the punk sound. Establishing your own label to issue a record was later often repeated, at the summit of the do-it-yourself attitude of the punk era.

After these first eventful months Devoto left the band to form Magazine. Pete Shelley took over the vocals and Diggle switched from bass to guitar. With Steve Garvay as bass guitarist they signed with United Artists Records in 1977. The first single to be issued on this label was ‘Orgasm Addict’, a song which is still brash today, but caused a real stir in England of the 1970s. The BBC banning the single didn’t damage the sales figures whatsoever. The following albums ‘Another Music In A Different Kitchen’ and ‘Love Bites’ stormed the charts and the Buzzcocks toured all over Europe and America. They issued a third album ‘A Different Kind Of Tension’, before the group split up in 1981. Since 1989 the Buzzcocks have been reunited. The current line-up includes Shelley, Diggle, bass guitarist Chris Remington (who replaced long-standing band member Tony Barber in 2006) and drummer Danny Farrant. The Buzzcocks released their eighth studio album ‘Flat Pack Philosophy’ in 2006. In the 21st century the Buzzcocks are still relevant, not just as an innovative guitar band, but also as a continuing source of inspiration for the younger generation.

ADAM ANT
Discography:
Dirk Wears White Sox, Do It, 1979.
Adam Ant, born Stuart Leslie Goddard, formed Adam and the Ants with guitarist Lester Square, bassist Andy Warren, and drummer Paul Flanagan in London in 1977. During this time, the group's lineup was fairly unstable, with Square being replaced by Mark Gaumont. The band released their debut, ‘Dirk Wears White Sox’, on the independent label Do It in 1979.
At the time of its release, Dirk Wears White Sox wasn't a critical or commercial success, and the band felt the need to rework their image. Ant hired Malcolm McLaren, the manager of the Sex Pistols, to help redefine their image. McLaren dressed the band in pirate outfits and suggested a more accessible and pop-oriented style of music. The band followed his advice, preparing material for a new album. However, McLaren persuaded all of the Ants to leave Adam, using them as the core members of Bow Wow Wow. Adam Ant immediately formed a new version of the Ants, adding guitarist Marco Pirroni, bassist Kevin Mooney, and drummers Terry Lee Miall and Merrick.

The new band's first album, 1980's ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’, became an enormous hit in the UK, launching three Top Ten hit singles. ‘Prince Charming’, released the following year, retained the same formula, spawning two number one singles, ‘Stand and Deliver’ and ‘Prince Charming.'

After ‘Prince Charming’, Adam Ant ditched the Ants for a solo career, retaining Marco Pirroni as a songwriting collaborator and a supporting musician. Adam's first solo album, ‘Friend or Foe’, was released in 1982, and although his next album, 1983's Strip, had some highlights and hit singles, it marked the end of his reign as one of Britain's top pop stars.

Released in 1985, Vive le Rock had some fun moments but the record didn't earn any hit singles, so Adam Ant pursued a surprisingly successful career in acting. In 1990, Ant made a comeback with the catchy hit single ‘Room at the Top’ from the Manners & Physique record, but the album failed to produce another hit single. For the next five years, Ant concentrated on acting.
By the time Adam Ant returned to recording in 1995, echoes of his music could be heard in the spiky singles of Elastica, the neo-goth industrial rock of Nine Inch Nails, and the pseudo-glam of Suede. Instead of capitalizing on the new wave revival, Adam Ant's 1995 comeback Wonderful had little to do with the stylish, intensely rhythmic music he made in the early '80s. Instead, the album repositioned him as a more mature pop-rocker, with crafted songs that featured acoustic guitars as prominently as electrics.

Former Adam and the Ants’ Dave Barbarossa (drums), Matthew Ashman (guitar), and Leigh Gorman (bass) along with the stunning, “plucked from obscurity” Annabella Lwin (vocals) made up the 1980s pop group, Bow Wow Wow. The band was the brainchild of Malcolm McLaren, former manager of the Sex Pistols and New York Dolls, to help promote his partner, Vivenne Westwood’s fashion lines.

The group released the world’s first cassette single on record label EMI but didn’t start to achieve real mainstream attention until its switch to RCA in 1981. That same year, Bow Wow Wow released its first album called See Jungle! See Jungle! Go Join Your Gang Yeah! City All Over, Go Ape Crazy. The album attracted controversial attention due to Lwin, then only 15, shown naked on the cover but also produced the group’s first UK top ten hit in the form of Go Wild in the Country.
In 1982, Bow Wow Wow had limited success with its second album Last of the Mohicans which included its cover of The Strangeloves’ I Want Candy. Bow Wow Wow’s version of this song is still considered a New Wave classic and features on various movie soundtracks, TV advertisements and 80s compilations.
Bow Wow Wow stepped away from its catchy pop tunes with a distinctive African beat to produce When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going but the sound didn’t strike a chord with original fans and harkened the end for the band.

Citing exhaustion and illness, Bow Wow Wow went their separate ways in 1983. Ashman and Barbarossa went on to form Chiefs of Relief and Lwin enjoyed a humble solo career.
Shortly after Ashman’s death in 1995, Lwin and Gorman did get back together for a North American tour in 1997 and then again in 2003 for KROQ’s Inland Invasion concert series. Operating at of Los Angeles, these two original members front the new lineup of Bow Wow Wow and continue to perform sporadically at smaller venues.

SEX PISTOLS
Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones and Paul Cook. Four names that can mean only one band, Sex Pistols. An English punk rock band that formed in London in 1975 and were responsible for initiating the punk movement in the UK. Their initial career only lasted two and a half years but they are regarded as one of the most influential acts in popular music.
The Sex Pistols may have only been together for two years in the late '70s, but they changed the face of popular music. Through their raw, nihilistic singles and violent performances, the band revolutionized the idea of what rock & roll could be. In England, the group was considered dangerous to the very fabric of society and was banned across the country; in America, they didn't have the same impact, but countless bands in both countries were inspired by the sheer sonic force of their music, while countless others were inspired by their independent, do-it-yourself ethics. Even if they didn't release any singles by themselves, there was an implicit independence in the way they played their music and handled their career. The band gave birth to the massive independent music underground in England and America that would soon include bands that didn't have a direct musical connection to the Sex Pistols' initial three-minute blasts of rage, but couldn't have existed without those singles.

Guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook were regulars at a boutique owned by their manager, Malcolm McLaren; bassist Glen Matlock worked at the store. Vocalist John Lydon, who would later perform under the name Johnny Rotten, met the rest of the group at the shop and was asked to join the band. While the band played simple rock & roll loudly and abrasively, Rotten arrogantly sang of anarchy, abortion, violence, fascism, and apathy; without Rotten, the band wouldn't have been threatening to England's government -- he provided the band's conceptual direction, calculated to be as confrontational and threatening as possible. The publicity caused by their caustic first single "Anarchy in the U.K." caused the band to be dropped by their record label, EMI. Matlock was fired before their next single "God Save the Queen," which was released on Virgin; it was banned by the BBC. Matlock's replacement was Sid Vicious, a tough street kid who, unlike the rest of the band, couldn't play his instrument.
Their short career only produced four singles and one studio album, “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols”. Perhaps best known for their single, “God Save the Queen”, the band’s concerts and public appearances often ended in mayhem.

January 1978 saw Rotten leave the band and announce their breakup after a turbulent US tour. Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979.
In 1996 the band reformed for a reunion tour and have staged further reunion shows since. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 but refused to attend, calling the museum “a piss stain”. Well guys, it’s good to know you appreciate your fans…

Born in 1957 as Susan Janet Ballion in England, the vocalist of Siouxsie & the Banshees took on her stage name "Siouxsie Sioux" in the '70s. Starting off her career with Sex Pistols, Siouxsie then formed the band Siouxsie and the Banshees with her friend Steven Severin in 1976.
The band achieved great success in 1978 when its first single, "Hong Kong Garden", was released and instantly reached the top 10 spot in the UK music charts. With later hit singles like "Happy House" and "Spellbound", and the album "A Kiss in the Dreamhouse", Siouxsie and the Banshees became more and more popular. But after 11 successful studio albums, the band members went their different ways. Siouxsie Sioux began her solo career, recording albums with other artists like Morrissey and Marc Almond.

Siouxsie Sioux was married to English drummer Peter Edward Clarke, known popularly as "Budgie", whom she met with during the "Join Hands" tour of "Siouxsie & the Banshees". Siouxsie Sioux formed the band "The Creatures" with her husband in 1981, while they were still with Siouxsie & the Banshees. She divorced him in 2007.
