ROCK 'N' ROLL LOVE TRIANGLE

Image:

I was married to Eric's close friend, George Harrison, but Eric had been making his desire for me clear for months. I felt uncomfortable that he was pushing me in a direction in which I wasn't certain I wanted to go.

But with the realisation that I had inspired such passion and creativity, the song got the better of me. I could resist no longer.

WEBB WILDER Q&A

Webb Wilder Q&A

There are two Nashville sounds.

There's the overproduced dreck on FM radio, the music you hear in LongHorn. Forget Music Row, though, and hunt for the good stuff. There's real music out there, Webb Wilder says, and real people making it.

Biography:

Jimmy Page is without doubt one of the most influential guitarist of our time. Jimmy Page went from a bright eyed, young Skiffle lad to a founding member of Led Zeppelin, Page is a prolific songwriter and musician.

Born in England, Page haphazardly discovered the guitar as an adolescent and according to sources is largely, self taught. Like many young musicians of this time, he was inspired by the blues and rock-n-roll music being imported from America. Page’s first televised appearance was in 1957 playing in a Skiffle group.

Page would often jam with other icons but then only other local musicians like Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. He eventually would go on to be a session musician and work on songs for other artists more notably, The Who, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull and Van Morrison. Some of these recordings were documented, some not and some controversial.

In 1964 and 1965, Page was offered Eric Clapton’s spot in The Yardbirds. He declined both times and didn’t actually join the band until 1966. The band eventually had some line-up drop outs. Page decided to recruit Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones and out of the ashes of the failing Yardbirds rose Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin created classic rock radio standards such as Dazed and Confused, Whole Lotta Love, Immigrant Song, Black Dog, and Stairway to Heaven.

The music produced, composed and played by Page during his Led Zeppelin days continues to be the archetype for future rock, punk and metal bands. His techniques in downstroke guitar riffs, innovative dual guitar harmony, mesmerising solos and on-stage theatrics are some of the most quoted inspirations. According to a 2005 interview, Page estimated that he owned over 1500 guitars but he is most well-known for playing a double headed Gibson and Les Pauls. Gibson would go on to release signature Jimmy Page models.

After the death of Bonham, Led Zeppelin broke up. Page continued to be active within the music industry including forming a supergroup with Yes bassist, Chris Squire called XYZ, featuring on a Honeydripper’s recording, film soundtracks and session work. In 1988, he released a solo album called Outrider. In the 90s, he successfully collaborated with Whitesnake front man, David Coverdale. In 1994, he reunited with Plant again for a widely acclaimed MTV Unplugged session.

Four years later, a US rapper, Puff Daddy sampled Kashmir for his hit, Come with Me which featured on the Godzilla soundtrack. Page played a cameo role in the video to support the single.

Page has carried on in this vain by playing live with modern acts and re-mastering Led Zeppelin material.

Die-hard (and not so die-hard) fans were in awe and admiration when Page joined the surviving Led Zeppelin members for a reunion concert in 2007. The reunion caused an international stir and media frenzy.

Biography:

The Yardbirds were a British R&B/Psychedelic influenced band that launched the careers of seminal musicians, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

Their best known songs were gems such as: ''For Your Love'', ''Heart Full Of Soul'' and ''I'm A Man'' and were a highly influential band - their guitar sound - heavy with feedback - was unique at the time.

They celebrated a period in their career of a joint musicianship between Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck but went on to become a quartet for the remainder of their career, despite experiencing many line-ups changes.

The band split in 1968, after the classic ''difference in musical direction'' and played their final gig in July 1968 at the Luton Technical College in Bedfordshire, England.

From the ashes of The Yardbirds emerged the formation of music giants, Led Zeppelin. Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja reformed The Yardbirds in the 1990's - in 2003 the album ''Birdland'' was released.

Nearly all the surviving members from the band attended the induction into the ''Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame'' in 1992, including Beck and Page.

Original members included Chris Dreja (born November 11, 1944, in Surbiton, London, England) rhythm guitar, then bass; Jim McCarty (born July 25, 1943, in Liverpool, Merseyside, England), drums; Keith Relf (born March 22, 1943, in Richmond, London; died of electrocution, May 14, 1976), vocals, harmonica; Paul SamwellSmith (born May 8, 1944, in Richmond; left group 1966), bass; and Anthony "Top" Topham (born in 1947 in England; left group 1963), lead guitar.

Other members included Jeff Beck (born June 24, 1944, in Wellington, London; joined group 1965; left group 1966), lead guitar; Eric Clapton (born Eric Patrick Clapp, March 30, 1945, in Ripley, Derbys, England; joined group 1963; left group 1965), lead guitar; Jimmy Page (born April 9, 1944, in London; joined group 1966), bass, then rhythm guitar, then lead guitar.

Relf, Samwell-Smith, Dreja, and Topham met at London's Kingston Art School, 1963; band originally called the Metropolitan Blues Quartet; performed in Richmond and London clubs; became house band at Crawdaddy club, 1963; backed Sonny Boy Williamson on tour, 1963; signed with EMI/Columbia (in U.K.), 1964; supported the Beatles, Paris, 1965; toured U.S., 1965; toured Australia and Far East, 1967; appeared in film Blow Up, 1967; disbanded, 1968. Page went on to form the New Yardbirds, which became Led Zeppelin.

Biography:

The English rock band Led Zeppelin were formed in 1968 evolving from The Yardbirds, with a line up of Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Bonham (drums) and John Paul Jones (keyboards and bass guitar). They developed a unique style (at least then) blending heavy metal rifts with ‘acoustic’ interludes’.

Led Zeppelin incorporated musical genres of heavy metal, hard rock and blues rock. Apart from that they also used a wide range of other musical genres such as reggae, funk, rockabilly, soul, Celtic, Classical, Arabic, Latin, Pop and Country.

One thing that distinguished Led Zeppelin was their notion to promote album-oriented rock in the United Kingdom and around the World so they never released famous songs from their albums as singles in the country (for example "Stairway to Heaven"). Their first album "Led Zeppelin 1" was already in the Billboard 100 before being released in the UK, following an extensive US tour. Posters/ads from that tour can be found in this archive.

Led Zeppelin sold over 300 million albums globally and has a massive world wide following. The Band was rated No.1 in the list of VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. In addition, Rolling Stone magazine rated the band the heaviest and the largest band of 70’s.

Following the death of John Bonham the band announced that they would never tour again, but came back together for a tribute concert in 2007 at the O2 in London where over one million people attempted to buy tickets.

Albums include "Led Zeppelin 1", "Houses of the Holy", "Led Zeppelin II", "Physical Graffiti", "Led Zeppelin III", "Presence", "Led Zeppelin IV", "Coda" and "In Through the Out Door". Led Zeppelin released majority of their album on the Swan Song and Atlantic labels. Collaborations range from working with The Yardbirds, The Honeydrippers, Page & Plant, Coverdale & Page, The Firm, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss and Band of Joy.

James Marcus Smith
Biography:

P. J. Proby, originally born James Marcus Smith on 6th November 1938 in Houston, Texas was educated at San Marcos Military Academy, Western Military Academy and Culver Naval Academy. After graduating he moved to California and became an actor and recording artist, he released two singles "Go, Girl, Go" and "Loud Perfume" on an independent label which went unnoticed. In 1962 he started writing songs and recording demos for artists like Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. He then auditioned for Liberty Records.

Proby created an individual fashion style wearing buckle shoes, pirate shirts, tying his ponytail back with a ribbon and wearing different coloured velvet suits for each day of the week. His trousers split on a number of occasions sending female fans into a frenzy but eventually causing tour managers to drop him in 1966.

In 1964 he had a string of successful hits including "Hold Me" and "Together" (featuring guitarists Big Jim Sullivan and Jimmy Page), "Somewhere", "Maria" and "I Apologise". A royalty dispute in 1966 saw Proby split with Liberty Records. Proby then turned his hand to musical theatre and was very successful playing Elvis Presley in 'Elvis - The Musical'. The 1980s saw Proby covering a number of popular songs including Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", Gloria Jone's "Tainted Love" and the Sex Pistols "Anarchy In The UK". Proby is still touring now.
